I am trying to identify a silver mark on a candle stick that I recently inherited. The mark looks like a flower.......with three stars under it. The flower could be something else, but I do not know how to describe it any other way. Also is there a place in the internet that will allow me to look up all Hallmarks, not just specific ones?

Silver is a vast field of study. There is no one place to go to identify all hallmarks. Generally, the marks on silver are governed by the country in which the piece was made. Laws on hallmarking vary from country to country and depending on the timeframe in which a piece was made. There a many variables.

As for your candlestick, it would be most helpful if you could post a photo of the candlestick and its marks. A picture can tell so much.

I was just checking to see if there was anyone who knew what this mark meant. I have been searching, but I guess without going to the library, there is not much on net to go by. If anyone has any info, or I will even take Clues <IMG SRC="http://www.smpub.com/ubb/wink.gif" alt="wink"> ...... please let me know

Well the pieces look like silverplate. The marks used by plating firms were often vague symbols, such as fleurs de lis, crosses, stars, or just odd shapes, made to seem like real silver marks. I would guess your pieces to be English or American. Can't shed light on maker. From what I can tell looking at those pictures, I'd guess last quarter 19th century.

The mark doesn't ring a bell with me either, but I agree with Paul that they appear to be silverplate. By the way, they are actually called hurricane lamps and they sure look great on a sideboard.

I think this is probably an undocumented mark of the Barbour Silver Co. of Hartford, Connecticut.

The crown with the wings and something in the middle (or whatever it is) and the star-plus-star in squares are elements they used in one of their other marks. See Rainwater's, "Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers."
