This weekend, I purchased a discolored circular compote or serving dish that has small open ear shaped handles on each side, two side U shaped holders (for a serving spoon or knife) on one side, and a domed lid. The lid has twining leaves and four coneflower type images engraved as line drawings. I thought it was pewter at first. As I continue to clean the pieces, I think that I have sterling silver or an electro plated compote. It is only about -5.5 inches in diameter and stands about 7 inches tall to the little decorative swan shaped pudding button on top. It has a single footed base that is about 3.5 inches across the bottom.

It is difficult to read the markings. At the bottom it reads Bristol, CT 197 The top line reads MFRD & GUARTEED. Below that it reads The ????????????Q?SILVER CO. Could you please give me feed back on what I have purchased?

Thanks.

Hi,

It sounds like you have a Victorian silverplate covered butter dish. The two holders on the front are for the master butter knife to rest.

The composition of the mark, as well as the lack of a sterling stamp, make me think it is silverplate. Probably most of the silver is worn off, if it looks "pewtery". I will see if I can find a silverplate manufacturer located in Bristol, CT, and get back to you.
