My father passed away back in May. As I was going through his things I found an old antique silver plate.

On the back of the plate it is stamped W & S Blackinton Company 1865. I think that it was his mothers grandmothers plate. Which would make it my Great, Great Grandmothers.

Is there anyone out there who knows anything about this company?

I have begun to use some polishing cream to get rid of tarnish. If I was to have the plate silver plated would it make the plate less valuable?

Any information would be helpful. Thank you.

Penny

W. & S. Blackinton Co. was founded in 1865. After being acquired by Elmore Silver Co. in 1938, they made plated silver holloware. Production curtailed during WWII, resumed in 1945, Purchased by Raimond Silver Mfg. Co. in 1966 and moved to Chelsea, Mass.

The 1865 probably refers to the founding date.

As a plated item, it has no great value. Replating would be expensive, but if the plating is really worn, replating could make the item more presentable.
