I have a silver flower basket from the early 1900's that is very ornately carved with old world scenes, possibly tavern or cabin scenes. It has a windmill with a pipe on each side marked on the bottom and the number 3738. It was my grandmother's who was from Germany. Can anyone help? Thanks, IP: Logged |

Hello Beth, Your basket sounds like one of the pieces of "Dutch Colonial" style silverplate made during the 1920's. The mark is that of the Barbour Silver Co. of Hartford, CT. The company was formed in 1892 and became part of the International Silver Company comglomerate in 1898. I am not certain when the Barbour Trademarks were retired. At any rate, Barbour made quite a lot of Dutch Colonial style silverplate, most of it marked with the windmill and pipes, which are in themselves an allusion to Holland. To summarize, you have a piece of early to mid-20th Century American silverplate in the Dutch Colonial Style, by Barbour Silver Co. I hope this helps! Brent IP: Logged |
