If anyone could identify this pattern, I'd certainly appreciate it. The knife blade is marked "Reed & Barton" and there are a few illegible marks toward the bottom of the knife blade as well as "patent 1886". There are no marks on the handle. I don't know if it will show up in the picture or not, but there is a cupid between the buffalo and the birds--it seems out of place. Any ideas? Would this be a silverplated piece? Thanks for your help IP: Logged |

Neat piece! Reed & Barton began production of sterling silver in 1889, so it is very likely that your knife is silverplate. The pattern is very unusual, as you say, and was likely a "not-full-line" pattern. In other words, the pattern was limited to a few select pieces, and you could not build a complete service in it. If someone has an 1880's Reed & Barton catalog they might be able to come up with the name for it. How large is the knife? If it is on the small side, it might be part of a child's set. Children's flatware could be even more whimsical than that for adults, and some patterns only appear in child's sets. I hope this helps! Brent IP: Logged |

Thanks for the information, Brent. The knife is about 9 1/2 inches long, so I guess this pattern was for whimsical adults. Cupid just doesn't seem to fit with all those game animals, but it's an entertaining design. IP: Logged |
