Help, I just purchased a plate, not sure if its silver or silver plated. It has 3 marks on the back, the first being a horse head facing side ways in a crest, the second I can't make out and the third looks like 3 birds of some kind possibly storks. Not really sure. On the opposite side has the numbers 1793. I know nothing about silver but purchased it for my antique room. I was told it was found in the chimney of an old house. Any help will be appreciated. It sounds like the unascribed mark pictured in Rainwater and Redfield's "Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers", page 384. If your plate isn't marked "sterling" it is most likely silverplate. You could have the plate tested to determine whether or not it is silverplate. Sterling silver is an alloy containing at least 92.5% silver. The silver used in electroplating is pure silver (99.9% pure). The "horse head in a shield, two angels? in a shield, three birds in a shield" mark (not a hallmark) is shown in Rainwater/Redfield's "Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers", page 384, "unascribed marks". Rainwater also shows it as a mark of the Friedman Silver Co, Inc., Brooklyn, New York, "creators of fine holloware since 1908, bought by the Gorham Corporation in 1960." IP: Logged |
