Hi: I'm having trouble identifying a boxed set of two silver plated ornate berry spoons. The hallmark reads a sun (or star) symbol No A1, sun/star symbol then EP in a shield. The spoons are 9-inches long. Thank you for your help. IP: Logged |

Again, an example of English electroplate on a Nickel or German silver base. Unfortunately, this mark does not show up in the new guide to electroplate marks. They are definitely English, though. Sorry! NoA1 is supposed to be a mark of quality. You see A1 a lot on American silver plate, particularly from the Victorian era. Interestingly, the use of A1 as a mark of quality arises from Lloyd's of London, the legendary maritime insurance house. Insurance inspectors rate ships as to their seaworthiness, and thus their standing as an insurance risk. A1 is the highest rating. Thank you again Brent. Knowing that this set is English is a huge help. I had read that A1 guaranteed a certain amount of silver in the plating, but I haven't seen any thing with NoA1. Very interesting about the mark stemming from insurance risk rating. The material underneath the plating is quite gold is this indicative of nickle or German silver or neither? IP: Logged |

Mappin Brothers, used little sun-like devices on their silverplate, but the listed marks don't really match the ones on your berry spoons. It's a thought! IP: Logged |

The base metal German (or nickel) silver has a slight lemony yellow color when the silverplate wears off. Many times on berry spoons the bowls were gilded to prevent discoloration if actually used for fruit, so are yours gilded?? IP: Logged |

Thank you for your reply and information Audrey. No, the bowls are not gilded, the plating appears to have worn off on the fruit (blueberries & gooseberries I think). I will check into Mappin Bros. and see what I can find out. Thanks again. [This message has been edited by Annette (edited 06-09-2000).] IP: Logged |

Brent, are you still convinced that these are English? I have my doubts. I think the marks look like pseudo English plater's marks. IP: Logged |
