I found this object at good will, it looked interesting, but have not been able to identify it. It is clearly marked Poole Silver Co., but has EPCA, not EPNS, and a number "75" on it. It is bowl shaped with a hinged lid, wooden handle. The bowl is approx. 5" diameter, 2" deep. On the top of the lid is a lion crest, the lion is standing on its back feet and has a small scroll work underneath it. Can someone give me some info??? IP: Logged |

It sounds like a "silent butler". As I understand it, these items were used to discreetly collect the ashes from ashtrays, back in the days when everyone smoked and ashtrays needed to be emptied regularly. I have never seen a new one for sale, and they are an item whose time has passed. There are quite a few of them out there, usually in silver plate, copper or aluminum. Because they are no longer of any use, they unfortunately have little value. The EPCA mark is new to me. Electroplate on something. Copper Alloy, perhaps. Hope this helps! Brent IP: Logged |
