I have inherited a piece of Meriden silver. It is a serving tray or bowl, which sits on legs. It has a very ornate pattern on it which is like crackle. It also has the number "7" under the company logo on the bottom of the tray. What is this piece and what was it for? Does it have any value other than sentimental?

Thank you for your time and look forward to your reply.

What you have is a Nut Bowl. The "crackle" pattern is called a damascene finish. If your bowl hasn't been over polished, you will detect some small traces of gold in the silver pattern. The amount of gold wouldn't be significant as it was used to accent the pattern.

  • Damascene - 1: decorated or inlaid with a wavy pattern of different (especially precious) metals; "a damascened sword" 2: a design produced by inlaying gold or silver into non-precious metal.

The "No. 7" Under the Meriden mark is the model number.

As to value - we don't provide valuations on these forums .... Nevertheless, I suspect that the nut bowl is worth more to you than anyone else since it is a family heirloom.

The following is an image from the 1886 Meriden Britannia Company catalogue.
