I came across this item at an estate auction about a month ago and would love to know what the heck it is and it's uses, and maybe about how old it may be. It looks like some sort of spice holder. I'll describe it as approx. 16" high, the middle of the piece turns and has 6 openings approx.1 3/4" in diameter. There are flowers and leaves embossed around the middle and also on the bottom dome-like stand. The top is hard to explain... it has a stem coming from the middle and a tulip like shaped flower with 2 prongs that stand next to the flower with pointed tips. Any help would be great! Thank You. Sounds like a revolving dinner castor, popular in the last half of the 19th century. The six openings would have held glass containers -- salt shaker, pepper shaker, mustard container, and cruets for oil, vinegar or other condiments. IP: Logged |
