I own this unusual piece. The inscription on the plate reads,"Speed away, speed away on thine errand of light." Above these words is a line of music notes and flowers carved above the notes. The corner of the piece is adorned with wings intricately detailed with feathers. The tray is 8" in diameter and it is 4" high including the pedestal. The stamp on the bottom says Derby Silver Co. January 25, 1887 3546. Do you know an exact name for this piece? Thank you in advance, IP: Logged |

It is most likely a card receiver. Derby used the 3500 series of numbers on such items. IP: Logged |

The inscription on your piece is the opening line of a hymn by Fanny J. Crosby -- an exhortation to proclaim the Gospel to "the lands that are lying in darkness and night...". quote: Perhaps it was a gift presented to a retiring missionary, or to one departing on a mission assignment. IP: Logged |
