Can anyone help me, I have inherited a small intricately engraved silver teapot. The engravings appear to be a forest scene with a wizard and three dancing fairies. The spout is also carved. The bottom is stamped with Rogers Smith & CO of Meriden CT , Quadruple 886. Thank you I hope to have pictures soon. IP: Logged |

Trademarks with the words Rogers Smith & Co. and Meriden CT were introduced in the early 1880s. At that time, the Rogers Smith & Co. was owned by the Meriden Britannia Co. The Meriden Britannia Co. became part of the International Silver Co. in 1897. Markings indicating "Quadruple" plate were dropped by the Meriden Britannia Co. in 1896 but Rainwater indicates that "some other makers" continued to use "Quadruple" marks until about 1912. So..., it isn't clear exactly how long the mark you describe was used. Straight-sided squat-shaped silverplate teapot designs were an innovation of the late 1880s which continued into the 1890s. 1890s designs called for smaller teapots, but continued to use the same squat shapes and straight sides. The "886" is a part or catalog number. Hope this helps! IP: Logged |
