I have a silver plated punch bowl and cups that were my grandfathers. The silver has worn off in many places and reveal a copper base. The handles of the cups are not copper but a dark gray metal. The hallmarks on the bottom of the cups are: in squares: E P C then scratched underneath is: N161 which may just be an identification mark. Any assistance would be highly appreciated. Thanks! Could the "birdshead" be the head of a man, with a beard, facing right? IP: Logged |

quote: It could be - the chin is pointed though, so it does look like a birds head - and it is facing right. The beard is down the front. IP: Logged |

With a "man with a beard facing right" a "crown" and a fancy "S", it sounds like The Sheffield Silver Co. The E, P and C each in its own square stands for ElectroPlate on Copper. The "H" in an acorn is interesting, but I have no idea. ------------------ IP: Logged |

The handles are probably white metal or britannia metal and were most likely electroplated when the cups were made. Once the silver is gone, the white metal oxidizes to a very dark gray. The scratch mark (N161) was most likely added after manufacture. The Sheffield mark was used from 1908 to 1950. IP: Logged |
