I just purchased these sugar tongs and can not identify the marks on the piece. There is a series of what appear to be hallmarks and makers marks - an A, an I or 1, a tiger or such head; and another mark in a shield. The words argentina silver are written in an arch above the letters J.G. Also on the piece is the name of S.Greenough & Sons. any help in identifying this piece would be great!!!

Your tongs are English silverplate, made by Joseph Gilbert ("JG"), of Birmingham, England. "Argentina Silver" was one of the trademarks used by the company. The A1 (or AI, depending on the font used) is a quality mark. Many of the English silverplate marks were designed to mimic the hallmarks used on solid silver. S. Greenough & Sons was probably the retailer. [This message has been edited by Stephen (edited 01-16-2003).] IP: Logged |
