Hi - An online appraisal told me my item marked H.B and also a sheild containing greek god Mercury, was made by H. Boulton Silver Co. Birmingham England. Does this sound correct? I can't find this company. Thanks for any help- Linda. IP: Logged |

Linda, The essence of evaluating silver includes viewing the marks on the piece being considered. There are a limitless combination of marks denoting silver content, country of manufacture, date of manufacture, etc. Without a clear photo of the mark on your piece in question, it is difficult to give you a robust answer as to the origins of your piece. Please see the link on How to Post Photos at the top of the forums for help in posting an image. IP: Logged |

Hi - thank you for your reply -I don't have a scanner etc. I realize that online appraisals without pictures are kind of silly, but I mostly just wanted to date my item and get its origin. It is an ostrich egg supported by an ostrich leg and foot and topped with an ostrich finial. It was great grandmothers. there are only two marks; mercury in a sheild - resembles the statue of mercury in front of the Domed conservatory in Sion park England (one arm up, other behind holding his staff or whatever, and appears to be running) The other mark is capital H.B in a rectangle. This is some kind of siver plate , as brass is showing through on slight wear marks on the base. This object kind of resembles ostrich egg cups or beer steins made in late 1800's, but is not a cup. I have spent so much time trying to find anything about it, and having no luck. Sorry this is so long, thanks again Linda IP: Logged |

Hi, The maker is Henry Bourne, not Boulton. The firm was working in Birmingham, England, post 1877. I'm afraid I don't have any other info at present, but you at least now have the correct name for futher research. Your piece sounds very interesting. I'm sure we would all love to see a picture, if you can manage it at some point. Brent IP: Logged |

My family is meeting today for my father's 80th birthday, and my brother in law will take a picture and post it for me. Please be warned that it is not in the same class as the lovely stuff I have seen on this forum. I already feel guilty for posting so much, but so curious. Thanks for your patience-Linda IP: Logged |

Mercury was a Roman god, not Greek. The Greek equivalent of Mercury was Hermes. At least your appraisal had the right town. IP: Logged |

Boy - you people will be tired of me, but apparently my stab at posting pictures did not work. One of the extremely kind moderators has offered to help me. Please don't hate me too much, I really like my ostrich egg. Linda IP: Logged |

This is a fabulous item. No appologies needed. I am very impressed and would have no problems owning such a piece. Congratulations. It appears to wonderfully consistant in it's ostrich design. I am not familiar with Australian work to attribute it. Thanks for posting it. IP: Logged |

Hi - I am glad people like my egg. The picture we took showing the 3 inch ostrich statue that sits on top did not turn out, but I had to hold it in place because it is broken off at its leg. I think could be re-attached fairly easily. Do you think this item has any value, that I should be careful who I get to do the repair? Also, now that I look at it closely, the leg and bird part don't seem to tarnish very much, does this mean it is nickel or something? thanks, Linda. IP: Logged |

FredZ, Am I missing something? Why did you mention "Australian work"? ------------------ IP: Logged |
