I am trying to identify some silver tongs that I recently acquired. They bare the hallmarks of ST & Co. They are shaped like two closed-ended forks. Both forks curve in the same direction. Any information would be helpful. IP: Logged |

Can you describe the "hallmarks", or better yet, post a closeup photo? IP: Logged |

Unfortunately I am in France so I can't post a photo, but I can describe the marks. The first one is simply "ST & Co" in an oval. The next one is "E.P.N.S." in what appears to be an oval as well. There are only letters - no symbols. The tongs themselves are very interesting and we are trying to figure out what they were used for. IP: Logged |

Here are pictures of the tongs along with the hallmarks. The first one reads ST&Co and the second one is E.P.N.S. Thanks in advance for the help. IP: Logged |

The "E.P.N.S." stands for electroplated nickel silver. ST&Co is the maker's mark. Note that neither of these are hallmarks -- hallmarks were not used on electroplated silver. Perhaps the tongs are intended for "French service" where two forks are used by the server to place food items on individual plates. It's a lot like using chopsticks and something like this would make it much easier for the unskilled. I'd quess that these are of 20th century English manufacture in a pattern based on a French design. Hope this helps, perhaps another forum member can identify the maker and the pattern. IP: Logged |
