I was given a tea set marked "Wilcox Ashley" and an "I" and "S" on the bottom. The set includes - two tea pots (one 10" and the other 11"), a creamer and a sugar bowl w/ top. Anyone have information about the tea set? Are they silver plate or ???

Wilcox was one of many companies that merged into the International Silver Company (IS). Ashley is a pattern or design. Your items are definitely silverplate. The taller "teapot" may be a coffee pot especially if it is more conical and less bulbous in shape than the other. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I have found references in the past to sets containing one pot of tea, which was brewed very, very strong, and one for boiling water with which to dilute the tea. A set like this may have that kind of combination. The safest bet is to assume a coffee pot and a teapot. IP: Logged |

I've also found references indicating that the water in the hot water pot was used to preheat the cups. Presumably, the hot water was then dumped in the slop (a.k.a. waste) bowl. Many Victorian tea sets were sold with six pieces (tea pot, hot water pot, coffee pot, creamer, sugar, and slop bowl.) And, you could also order the matching tray, urn, and spoon bowl. Are there any numbers on the bottom of the pieces? IP: Logged |
