I am trying to find information on the date, and maker for this spoon that I picked up at a flea market in France. There appears to be the letters W, W, K and S in their own reserve. The final mark is either a BP or and Ep with a crown over it. Any help would be appreciated - thanks again... IP: Logged |

Are you sure that the third mark is an ampersand? If it's an "H" as I suspect, the maker is W.W. Harrison of Sheffield, England. In any case, your piece is silverplate, the "EP" at 90 degrees meaning "electroplate." IP: Logged |

I have conflicting information on the dates that this WWHS mark (William Wheatcroft Harrison, Sheffield) was used. One source says 1857-1896, the other says 1857-1918. What is the mark on the left? -- B? [This message has been edited by Stephen (edited 02-05-2003).] IP: Logged |

I have this same peice here at home. The letter on the left is a B in a circle. And you were right about the "H" not being an ampersand. It also definitely has "EP" IP: Logged |

Does anyone know if the "B" indicates something? Could it be a quality mark, or perhaps an indication that britannia is the base metal? [This message has been edited by Stephen (edited 02-06-2003).] IP: Logged |

One thing to keep in mind when dating English silverplate is that the use of the crown device as a mark was discontinued (by law) after 1896, so this spoon dates before 1896. I think that the "B" indicates the thickness of the silverplate when it was new, the highest grade being A1. IP: Logged |
