my mom found an old tray that she seems to remember was from an aunt who sailed to europe alot in th 40s, 50s & 60s. it is about 6-7" sq, has a flag symbol (like a ship's) on the back with lv in it. it says gorham-ep-04291 6 and a funny symbol that i cannot identify. the edge as a nice wheat design. any help. is this silver? thank you so much.

Welcome to the forums.

The "ep" on your tray indicates that it is electro plate, a.k.a. silver plate or silverplate. Gorham is an American silver manufacturer. The "04291" is a catalog number and the 6 is probably an indication of the size of the tray.

It sounds like this could be "hotel ware", sold to hotels, institutions, restaurants, country clubs, shipping lines, air lines, railroads, etc.

Does anyone know what the flag/lv symbol and the "funny symbol" are?

The "funny symbol" may be a year mark. These were used on Gorham silver-plated holloware from 1868 to 1933.

Production numbers prefixed with zero, such as your "04291" were also used on Gorham's silver-plated holloware during that time.

Here's an example, the bugle is the year mark for 1919.

Note that the year mark isn't always stamped right near the trademark.

Priscilla, could you try to guess at what the funny symbol might be, or better yet, post a photo. I have a list of the Gorham date symbols, but there are so many that I'd need at least a clue. Sorry, no luck finding info on the lv flag.
