Well I found out who made this serving tray I found....Birmingham Silver Co.,Inc. around the time of 1954-1974 in Yalesville, CT. It is beautiful despite the condition, which is quite bad to be honest. It is a rectangular shape with shell and scroll design, and stasnds on flowered feet, and handles on the end carring over the scroll sand sjell motif. What i would like to know is if i can refurbish it without covering the ingraved design on the inside of the tray. And sense I only gave $2.00 for it , value wise would it be worth it? I am not after money for the tray, i bought it for the beauty (or should I say the potenial beauty) that I envisioned, recoated silver or painted silver, either way. I had originally planned to paint it til I noticed the markings and my curiousity got lose! Any info on the company and to my questions will be appreciated....thank you, AA in Madison IN IP: Logged |

Hello, and sorry for the delay. You have already discovered who made your tray, which is the hard part. As for what to do with it next, you have a few options. There are many silver plating companies throughout the country who would be happy to replate your tray. If the tray is in good condition otherwise (no dents, deep scratches or cracks), replating generally involves just electroltytic removal of the existing silver plating, buffing, and replating. The designs on your tray are likely formed by stamping, rather than engraving. To bring out the detail, good platers will artificially tarnish the design areas. If repairs are necessary, good platers will usually be able to do them for an additional fee. Because you only paid $2.00 for the tray, and it is not terribly valuable regardless, shop around to find a good plater at a good price. If possible, ask to see before and after pictures of work they have done. Ask about the tarnishing process to bring out the design; not all platers will do it. Many shops work through the mail, so don't let geography stop you from finding a good plating shop. Please do not paint your tray. Silver paint will never look like silver, and it will scratch off, leaving you with something that looks worse than it probably does right now. If you really like it and want to restore it, find a good silver plater. I hope this helps! Brent IP: Logged |
