Hello all, This may not be the right place to ask, but, I do not know where else to go. As you can see it is a trophy and the makers mark. Can anyone tell me anything about it? I am not sure if it is plated or solid silver. Is there a way to tell? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Vampire IP: Logged |

The trophy is definitely plated. 1926 is a little late for it not to be marked sterling, and a larger company, such as Wallace, would almost definitely have marked it if it was sterling. Another clue is the dark, pewtery color the piece has turned--this is the base metal that was originally covered with a thin coat of silver. Many of the old plated pieces have worn to this color. For some additional company information, the following paragraph comes from Rainwater: "In July 1875, Robert Wallace with his sons...and sons-in-law...formed a co-partnership under the name of Wallace Brothers for the manufacture of silverplated flatware on a base of cast steel. Manufacture of silverplated hollowware also began at this time." Hope this is informative & helps you out a little. IP: Logged |

Paul is right, it is definitely plate. Most silver trophies are, unless they are from a wealthy organization like a yacht club. The mark on your piece is actually quite unusual. The Wallace Brothers trademark was used by the Wallingford Company, apparently a subsidiary of Wallace Silversmiths. The Wallingford Company existed from 1903 to 1941, and appears to have specialized in silver plate. Your piece is very 1920's in style, and was probably made new just before it was inscribed in 1926.
