I've seen a few emails regarding this company in the various forums. I have a giant spoon - looks like a soup ladle - that has this stamp: oval with A1 inside, DIXON, a symbol that looks like a shield but is partially worn, Made in England. My grandmother had given it to my Mom to use with a covered server. I'm guesssing sometime in the 1950s. Also, the covered server has the mark EPNS, and 37594. Between the P and N there is a mark that looks like a three-leaf clover. In each of these leafs there is a star. Any ideas who this mark belongs to? Perhaps english? There are two trays that sit inside the server but the only markings on them is '110'. The '110' mark is also on the handle of the server that you use to pull the cover back. It's kind of an odd piece - looks like an egg with four 4" legs. Also has two handles for transport in addition to the small handle used for sliding the lid back. Not sure if there is a more technical name for this kind of piece? Thanks for any help you can offer!! IP: Logged |

Your silverplate soup ladle was made by James Dixon & Sons Ltd. of Sheffield, England. The company has a long history. James Dixon & Son became James Dixon & Sons in 1833. They've made silver, Sheffield plate and silverplate -- each with distinctive marks. In the late sixties I bought a whole set of their flatware with the same marks as yours for a little over $100. Brand new, eight five-piece place settings and eight serving pieces. Still using it and putting it in the dishwasher! In general, A1, EP, or EPNS (electroplated nickel silver) in a mark means that the item is silverplated. Your dish is silverplated as well. The covered server was made by Barker Ellis Silver Co., Ltd., Birmingham, England. They exported a lot of their items for sale in the USA. It sounds like an oval, revolving dome, footed vegetable(?) server. IP: Logged |
