I've got a wonderful sugar and cream set. the marks are strange though. The first 2 are in square top pointed bottom shields and the first is what appears to be a simple crown and a reversed c. The second looks like a M with little tuffs from the center line of the M. The last mark is in a shield but not as clearly defined as the first 2 and appears to me an m as well, but the little tail that is normally at the upper left hand corner of the m is at the upper right hand side. Could it have been marked in reverse? (backward perhaps) Any help would be appreciated. IP: Logged |

Hi, Sorry I didn't get to this more quickly. The marks sound like those used by both English and American silverplate manufacturers, but it is hard to tell without a picture. The crown is the traditional mark for the town of Sheffield, the "home" of silverplating. Many English platers incorporate the crown into their trademarks, as have some copy-cat Americans. I hope this helps somewhat. Brent IP: Logged |
