I had purchased several years ago what appears to be a silver communion cup. I was told when I purchased it at a garage sale, that it's over 100 years old. I'm trying to identify the makers marks and find out where it was made. I'm pretty sure that it originates somewhere in England. There are three marks on the bottom: 1: a plant of some kind and underneath a rectangle with a dog-like figure in it. 2: a crown and underneath a rectangle with a 5 pointed star. 3: a lion with it's front legs raised off the ground and the tail is also raised, and underneath in the rectange there is the same dog-like figure as the first rectangle. The cup itself has a rooster attatched to it. I have been trying to identify it for a long time. If you could give me any info or identify these marks you will be a friend forever. Thanks for you help.

Well....

The marks you describe make me think that the piece is silver plate, not sterling. Both English and American manufacturers used marks like those you describe on silver plated articles. That said, I'm afraid I can't place them exactly.

If you take the marks as two separate rows, the top row (plant, crown, lion rampant) sounds like one of the trademarks of E. G. Webster & Son of Brooklyn, NY. They made silverplate and sterling articles from 1859
to 1928. The trademark I am thinking of was used on sterling articles only, though. Is your piece marked "STERLING"? Are there any other marks besides those you described?

I hope this helps somewhat. If you could obtain a picture of the marks and send it to me, I might be able to help you further.
