Hi,

I am new to this forum and have found it fascinating. I came here to research my old Rogers.Smith & Co. Meriden CT Teapot and found so much information.....thank you.

I am now wondering if anyone knows anything about a company called Saracen. I have searched the forum with no results. I have a silver mustache cup, the only marking being Saracen Reproduction Pure Sil.(sic) Plate.

Can anyone help please?
Many thanks

Can you post a photo of the cup? These aren't documented marks.

Thanks Stephen,

I don't have a photo of the cup at present but will try to get one. It is approximately 5" high, with a mustache band across a small pouring type lip such as those seen on a creamer.

It is said to be for drinking wine. Just above the center of the cup is a band of raised grapevines approx. 1" wide going all the way around.

The only markings are the ones mentioned in my original post. It may well be just a cheap copy of an earlier cup, but the seller told me it came in a lot where most if not all of the other items dated around 1910.

"Saracen" may refer to some of the early tribes of Syria. I don't think the mark indicates a company, but rather that your vessel is a reproduction of an early Saracenic piece, probably one in a museum. If I see a picture of the piece, I can probably tell better if it is such a piece.

Here is background on Saracen and other Mid-East Silver copied by the Infidels of Western Europe.
quote:
Persian Style Silver

During the gilded age (1870 - 1890), top silver companies were looking for new designs which would appeal to the very wealthy new industrialists.

One of the leading firms in search of new designs was Tiffany & Co. of New York. The Persian pattern was patented in 1872 by the lead designer, Edward C. Moore. Moore was considered to be a man of "taste and distinction" who had traveled widely. During his travels he had brought home complete collections of works of arts from Persia, India, China and Japan.

The style which he created has been called "Moresque", "Saracenic", and "East Indian". At the Tiffany exhibit in Philadelphia in 1876, he displayed some of these magnificent styles of silver holloware and flatware which were considered to be nicer than the originals (which were also displayed by Turkey at the exhibition).

This tableware is vermeil (gold over silver), because only gold would appeal to these very wealthy people.

Tiffany Persian Style serving spoon

The spoon and fork below were made about the same time by a top Swedish silversmith known as CGH (CG Hallberg- Stockholm ). It is a modification of the Persian style for European tastes.

This elegant spoon and fork are also plated with gold over 830 silver. The curved rectangular finials are hand chased with great care on all four sides. Note the top of the finial is curved with a flat spot on the top which could hold engraved initials if desired. These pictures do not portray the true beauty of these pieces. You will just have to believe me when I tell you that this is flatware fit for royalty.

Saracens Middle Eastern History
(sresenz) , term commonly used by medieval Europeans to designate the Arabs and, by extension, the Muslims in general, whether they were Arabs, Moors, or Seljuk Turks. The whole History of the Middle East from Roman Empire to last nights news is dominated by the Saracens.
