Can anyone help with a maker for this teapot which was purchased recently on eBay.Also, would the dating given here be correct? I am including some notes from the seller and attempting to add some photos but as a newie to all this I am not sure I have done it correctly. Thanks for your help. "Classic English Silverplate Engraved Tea Pot - This lovely classic teapot is plated on Britannia Metal which would date it around the 1880s. It has heat spaces on the handles. Lovely deep engraving. The main body is just under 6" high plus the finial on top. It has a slight indentation for the thumb on the top of the handle, this is not a dent." IP: Logged |

The maker is Philip Ashberry & Sons of Sheffield, England. Is the mark above the 3952 a "B" or a "6"? IP: Logged |

Hi Stephen, Thanks for your reply. The mark above the 3952 is a 6, below that c c, and the wording following patent is 'expansion bottom'. The wording at the top is 'nonconducting handle'and between this and the P A & S is a mark which appears to have been scratched on "+ P / _" rather than imprinted like the other markings. I have posted another picture. Thanks for your help. IP: Logged |

I'm not sure how the seller concluded that it is "plated on Britannia Metal" nor how that would "date it around the 1880s". You might want to ask the seller. My references indicate that the Ashberry mark on your teapot was used from 1861 to 1890. Also, that "patent nonconducting handle" is found on some of their wares dated from 1856 to 1875. The "6" indicates that it is a teapot, rather than a coffee pot (7) or hot-water pot (5). Hope this helps. IP: Logged |

Thanks so much Stephen, your information helps a lot. I have just started a collection of various styles of old silverplate teapots and want to learn as much as I can about each piece. This is the third one now identified, the others being Rogers.Smith & co (Meriden) and a Walker& Hall(actually not a teapot in this instance, but a lovely old spirit kettle). Thanks again.
