I am wondering if anyone can tell me what the possible origin is of this epergne. I have never seen another in this form, most being glass and silver. We have wondered if perhaps it was intended to be a trophy, however the base shows no signs of any presentation plate ever having been attached. The only marking is on one of the smaller removable 'vases'and reads: Regd no. 53600? (I cannot make out the last number) There is no makers mark that I can see. Not much to go on I know. Apologies for the poor quality of the picture. Thanks. [This message has been edited by BarbS (edited 03-23-2003).] IP: Logged |

The "Regd no. 53600?" is an English design registration number. The number would have been issued somewhere between 1900 and 1909 (most likely in 1909), and would have protected the design for three years. I have been unable to link to your photo. IP: Logged |

Interesting! I'll bet it looks great filled with flowers. How is the epergne attached to the wood base? If it is marked I'd guess that the marks are on the bottom of the epergne, and not on the wood. IP: Logged |

Yes it does look great filled with flowers, and also with the smaller vases removed and replaced with candles. It is attached to the base with 4 large screws, however when I remove the screws I still can't remove the top from the base. I will persevere. Have you seen other epergnes of this style? There are no markings on the wood at all. IP: Logged |

I've seen plenty of things with the big chunky wooden bases - they immediately make me think English victorian. (lol, too much time spent crawling through "antique" places that imported the stuff by the container load.) I'm not sure if your epergne would classify as art nouveau or hint of art nouveau, perhaps someone else would like to add their opinion. IP: Logged |
