I am wondering if anyone recognizes the markings on a tea set I just purchased. Photos attached. Thanks for your help. I have no information on this set at all at present. IP: Logged |

It is a mark of the Knickerbocker Silver Co. of Port Jervis, New York. The thing on the left is the profile of a man's(?) head facing right with long hair and a strange looking hat. The Knickerbocker Mfg. Co. became the Knickerbocker Silver Co. (K.S. Co.) after 1894 but before 1904, probably about 1900. K.S. Co. was taken over by the Crescent Silverware Mfg. Co., Inc. in 1962. It looks like a nice set, hope this helps. IP: Logged |

Thanks so much for your help again Stephen. Do you know of any way I could date this set, or would perhaps a catalogue be the only way? IP: Logged |

Published research on twentieth-century silverplate holloware is scanty at best and mostly covers the major manufacturers. What has been published doesn't go much beyond 1960. Old catalogs or trade publications would certainly be the best way to research this. I'm not aware of any reproductions of same documenting Knickerbocker's work or where their archives (if any) ended up. It might be worth contacting the Minisink Valley Historical Society in Port Jervis to see if they can help -- they do have a web page with an E-mail contact. Note that in 1977, Crescent (also of Port Jervis) was sold to Samuel Kirk & Son,, Inc. In 1979, the Stieff Co. purchased the Kirk Co., and the the combined companies operated under the name of Kirk-Stieff Co. In 1990, Kirk-Stieff was acquired by Lenox Inc. (which also owns Gorham), a unit of Brown-Forman Corp. based in Louisville, Ky. I'm not sure what kind of information you might be able to get by contacting Brown-Forman or Lenox, but that also might be worth a try. Good luck and if you decide to pursue it, let us know what you find out! IP: Logged |
