I recently went to a garage sale and bought a beautiful planter approximately 10 inches high and 8 inches wide with the handles. It appears to be some type of decorative planter. There is another piece, that of like aluminum or other metal that slips into the decorative planter, this is what would hold the dirt, soil and plant, thus keeping it away from contact with the outside planter. It has severe tarnish and I am having a hard time cleaning it.

On the bottom though I have this inscription: "Spring Flowers" followed by the signature of WM Rogers and Son on the bottom of the planter on the inside.

What have I came across?
How old is it?
Is it silver, silver plate or another metal? I cannot tell!

All I know is I bought it for its beauty, and I only paid $1.00 for it.

Please tell me what you can?

Thank You very much I appreciate any information!!!
Thank you-PAUL

Could it be "Spring Flower" rather than "Spring Flowers"?

Is there a number stamped below the "Wm. Rogers & Son"? Perhaps something like "2050" or "2051"?

Which is the tarnished and marked piece, the inside piece or the outside piece? I'm confused.

Thanks for getting back, I appreciate it! You are correct, the inscription is "Spring Flower" not Flowers., but their is no marking of 2050 or 2051 on the piece. The inscription is on the outside piece underneath it, not on the inside piece which seems to be of aluminum or
other metal? (this is the insert which would hold a plant?) So, I hope you could tell me what it is, I can maybe later send a photo to you to help in identification, but for now thats all I know. I understand Wm Rogers made Silverware, tableware, etc., but I have not found any evidence of a planter anywhere? Please write back and I appreciate all your help!
Thank You

It sounds like you have a Spring Flower pattern wine cooler. Spring Flower was a silverplate holloware and flatware pattern introduced by the International Silver Co. in 1956. List price for these wine coolers was about $80.00 -- "aluminum liner for flowers included". This was about twice the price of a coffee pot or a teapot in the same pattern.

Thanks Stephen for all your help, I will send you a photo within the next two days. Just curious, was the $80.00 retail price you mentioned someone would have to pay for this item back in 1956? Or is this the price of the piece itself in today's market?

Thank you,
PAUL!

The price I quoted was from an early 1960s International catalog (described in the catalog as "Retail"). Different pattern, but the same item.
