There's no such thing as a stupid question! WMF is Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik, a German company formed in 1880. They produced decorative metalware mostly in a distinctive style -sort of a cross between Art Nouveau and Jugendstil (some of their productions were purely one or the other). Their designs won numerous European city Exhibition awards. They had their own glassworks, so made many silver, plated, brass, etc. items with glass liners and inserts. They also patented (1890s I think) and still hold a silverplating process whereby the plating on their items is twice as thick as usual. Their designs didn't evolve into pure deco and they were mostly making flatware by the 1930s. They did come back after the war but did not reprise the artistic successes of their turn of the century heyday since then as a few other famous surviving design firms have done. Vera. Württemberg, once a duchy, then a kingdom, is now a region in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. A "metallwarenfabrik" is a metal goods factory. An "AG" (aktiengesellschaft) is a legal entity, much like our corporations. (The most common legal forms in Germany are publicly traded capital companies (AG), limited liability corporations (GmbH), limited partnerships (KG), and sole proprietorships.) Thus, Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik Aktiengesellschaft or WMF AG. Commonly known as WMF. IP: Logged |

Stephen, Thank you for the info. I did find tons of WMF info right at this forum this morning. Looks like I need a new book! Does SMP have the "Antique Collectors Club" avail for purchase? Is this the Dr. Graham Dry's book you mentioned? ------------------ IP: Logged |

It was someone else who mentioned it. It is a 1906 WMF catalog reprint, published by Antique Collectors' Club Ltd. in the U.K. -- still available on their web site for 67,50 Euros. IP: Logged |
