I Have a Meriden B. tankard which I have been told dates to the 1850's. It is manufacture stamped and Quadrplate stamped as well. It has a domed hinged lid with finial. Very attractive, about 6 1/2" high and 5" circum' at it's widest point. I am interested in it's history. Any information will help. It's silver has worn, yet in good condition. Tahnk you. A tankard is a large drinking cup or mug having a single handle and often a hinged cover. When you describe your item as a "tankard", I assume that it has no spout. Is that correct? IP: Logged |

Thank you for your response. This container has no spout. The markings are exactly the same as the ones you showed me. IP: Logged |

Is your tankard numbered "052" (like the photo) or something else? IP: Logged |

The Meriden Britannia Co. was founded in 1852 and by 1855 began offering electroplated wares. An 1867 catalog shows that their best grade of plated holloware was triple plate. I don't know when they started offering quadruple plated holloware, but they stopped marking their holloware "QUADRUPLE PLATE" in 1896. In any case, your tankard wasn't made in the 1850's. At the earliest, some time after 1867, and at the latest, in 1896. A closer determination of when it was made would require finding it in one of the many Meriden Britannia Co. catalogs. The "203" is the catalog number, perhaps one the forum members with the right catalog can give you a better answer. If you'd like to post a photo, that might also help. IP: Logged |
