I have two 10" oval silver plates by International Silver Co. for the United States Navy. Bottom of plates read, USN, International Silver Co., X 1 3 0 5, 10 in. What it does not say is if they are silver soldered, silver plated, or sterling. Any ideas on the plates?? I'm surprised that they do not say as I have a pitcher that is also for the USN made by Reed and Barton...the pitcher says silver soldered. IP: Logged |

About the only thing that would be soldered on a "plate" is a trim around the edge. Do your plates have a trim around the edge? If so, can you tell whether the trim is stamped or soldered? IP: Logged |

There is no trim around the edge and I can not tell any solder or "crimp" marks around the edge, it looks like it just "flows". There is no silver loss anywhere on these plates. IP: Logged |

If they were sterling, they would be marked "STERLING". If they tarnish, they are undoubtedly silverplate. IP: Logged |
