I found a beautiful coffee/tea serving set today in an antique store. The bottom of all 5 pieces reads "Silver on Copper" and 3 small hallmarks are stamped on it. Not having my silver identification book with me, nor my glasses, I couldn't determine the maker. No other markings stating manufacturers name. An old and very, very heavy set. My question is this: Is it common for coffee/tea sets to be marked in this manner? Any idea of age without knowing hallmark identifications? Thanks much. IP: Logged |

There are a couple (probably more) companies that marked their wares "Silver on Copper" when that was the case. The "hallmarks" are really "pseudohallmarks" adopted by many US companies in the 19th century to try to convince the buying public that their wares were better than they were. In fact, for the most part, their wares are quite good and the marks remained as their company "trademarks" and were used on all their products. However, to identify the company,we really need to see a picture of the marks, as well as a picture of the piece. Hope you can post one. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Here is a photo of the tea set. I wasn't able to get a clear shot of the stamped identifying marks due to glare from my digital camera. I took 9 shots and none of them turned out. Sorry. I know you can't identify by the photo but I'm sending it anyway. I can describe the stamped images. There are 3, all in 3 separate squares. 1st one is a crown, second is an S with a slash through it and the 3rd is shield with unidentifiable markings in it. If you have any leads, please let me know. Thanks much. Leisa IP: Logged |

I imagine these are your marks - I'm afraid I don't know the company, but maybe someone else does. I guess they date from the 1930s or later.

Oh thank you Patrick! Yes, those are the marks exactly. Now, any idea when I begin my search finding out about them? Leisa IP: Logged |

Your service was produced by the Sheridan Silver company of Taunton, Massachusetts. The company began in 1944 as C & C Silver Co and was incorporated in 1946. If you run a search for Sheridan in the Forum's Silverplate section, you will find several related topics. IP: Logged |
