I have a water pitcher marked F B Rogers with no crown and 1883 trademark. The mark reads: "Made by F. B. Rogers Silver Co. Taunton, MASS, silver on copper #707". I know the history of the company - 1883 to 1955, but need to know if this piece is 19th or 20th Century? Thanks. Jean IP: Logged |

Generally, a mark on silverplate by itself does not allow us to date a piece. The manufacturers were somewhat erratic in their use of marks. It is not that unusual to find reissues long afterwards using the original mark. IMHO silverplate marks refer more to the way a piece was marketed than to a time period. The only idea I would have is that the 'silver on copper' tends to be 20th century. Which would date this item sometime in the last 100 years. With silverplate, I read the mark and look seriously at the design. From the combination of the two, I make an educated guess as to the period of production. These can be very long periods, typically 25 years or more. Makers of plate tended to stick with a few basic forms which they adapted to new design trends thru decoration and fiddling with finials etc. So, a look at the item and the mark allows an idea of when a piece was made. The mark alone does not. IP: Logged |
