I'd like to find out more about Meriden Britannia Company and the 1873 Silver Box (Jewelry Casket) (dimensions: 3/5"xx2.75". It looks like silver with etchings on it. The box has a lid, also. I'd like to know more about this box. IP: Logged |

I'd love to know more about why you say 1873? Meriden Britannia was the greatest of the silverplate companies in 19th-century America--growing out of a pewter factory (hence Britannia, which is the English term for pewter) and ultimately becoming the kernel of International Silver in the late 1890s. The dimensions seem odd--a jewelry casket would be much larger than what you describe. Can you provide some background on this piece? IP: Logged |

Is 1873 stamped on the box? If so, it is a catalog number, not the year it was made. IP: Logged |
