I have a coffee/tea service stamped Meriden Silver Plate Co, quadruple plate with CS 1424. It consists of a coffee pot, teapot, large pot with a spigot, a creamer and sugar holder (may be a waste bowl). It was a gift from my great great grandfather to his wife. I am not sure if it is complete, the creamer looks like it should have a lid. how can I find out what the complete set contained. It is monogrammed too. thanks. IP: Logged |

I don't know about a No.1424 but in my 1886 catalog there is a No.1924 Tea Set. The basic set is six pieces:

quote: That is very helpful...thanks! I double checked and the number stamped in the bottom is 1424. Family history suggests it would have been purchased before 1880. Where did you get your catalog. Thanks again, IP: Logged |

Bob, We have two copies. The original full size catalogue and a trade size 1982 reproduction by Dover Books. We found the Dover publication in a used book shop. We see the Dover reproduction fairly often so it shouldn't be too hard to find. IP: Logged |

Mr. Martin, Thank you. As you can see I am a neophyte. Just starting researching and found that you are an expert in the field, so I appreciate your time. I have started to shine the set up and it is quite beautiful. I have a number of trophies that my grandfather earned as a hurdler in from 1914 to 1918. They have various marks - Colonial Silver quadruplate; Poole Silver,(which is faded and I can't see what sort of silver though it says guaranteed)) and finally an odd sort of mark that looks like an anchor and I can make out the word Human in the stamp. It also says "special metal", so I assume it is not silver plate, though it looks it. Finally I have a large trophy (20 inches) dated 1917 made by Reed and Barton that I think is silver gilt. Thanks, We have two copies. The original full size catalogue and a trade size 1982 reproduction by Dover Books. IP: Logged |

When it comes to silverplate there are many others that have much more experience, for example the moderator of the Silverplate Forum, Dale. What I would suggest is that you post each trophy as a separate thread. Be sure to include a photo of the trophy, its' inscription and a close up of the marks. IP: Logged |

The composition of tea sets is something that really doesn't have a definitive answer. Whatever people wanted was pretty much what they got. I have seen very old sets that contained multiple coffee pots. And some that contained chocolate, syrup and mysterious pitchers. There are some old ones that have a sherry jug with them. So, all I can suggest is to look at the set and try to figure out your ancestors' beverage preferences. A large number of coffee pots would indicate large scale get togethers or possible socializing in separate rooms. A sherry jug probably indicates a fondness for Irish coffee. The trophy is probably 'homan' not 'human'. IP: Logged |

Dale, Thanks. I remember the set when I was a child and my recollection is that it was what Scott described (though I will certainly look out for the sherry jug . You are right, of course, it is Homan. Bob

RE TROPHIES Your Poole trophy is good quality silverplate. Pieces of this vintage are usually marked < Guaranteed Poole Silver Co. Taunton Mass. > Poole trays, boxes and wine coolers were also frequently engraved as trophies or commemorative pieces. ------------------ IP: Logged |
