Derby Silver - Cellar doors We thought these cellars doors were something you might appreciate. This was well crafted and the doors work better than most real cellar doors. We aren't sure if it had a particular purpose but believe it is a cigarette box. It measures 3.75" w X4.5 D X 2.75 H.

Tasty piece. I'd be tempted to set aside my pipe and buy a packet of Players. [This message has been edited by wev (edited 04-03-2004).] IP: Logged |

Since I did this post last year I have been hoping see other members favorite well crafted SP. I though I would revive this post and see if anyone of our new members have anything to share. IP: Logged |

Very nice piece indeed. I have noticed that some pieces of silverplate look superior to the real thing. I will try and post a photo or two of a couple of pieces of SP we own, if my digital camera allows me to .. IP: Logged |

I have another little item which has intrigued me and which I believe is silverplate. It's a small spoon (the handle is twisted and at the top there is a figure of a bear holding a staff. The other end of the spoon is made of a coin (?) marked Victoria Empress on the inside (with a figure) and the other side is marked "Two Annas India 1892" and is engraved in a very nice way. I am not sure where it comes from - Unfortunately I cannot take a decent photo of the item. But I will try further.

The cellar doors are nice. From the description, I had thought this would be Tufts. But Derby, even with this late mark I associate with the twenties, very interesting. I would guess a cigarette box too. But perhaps something else, like a presentation case for a diamond ring: the jewel among the coals. What I have observed over the years is that silverplate tended to be made for a trendier, more fickle market than sterling. So, in US silverplate there are many things that were considered quite out there when new. In Art Deco one of the most advanced patterns is Friendship aka Medality. Which came from Betty Crocker. Just a thought that obviously needs more organizing. IP: Logged |

Such a wonderful box! Some twenty odd years ago, my first good silver dealer friend (gave me my Keystone index, now falling apart) had what was the same or very similar piece in a larger size. If memory serves, it was in the area of 5" x 7" and 4" tall. Can't recall the maker, but do recall the price, which seemed high then, would be a bargain now! Still wish all these years later that I'd bought it. Oh well, certainly not my only regret! Cheryl IP: Logged |
