Here is an interesting English electroplated berry (?) spoon set in a fitted case. The handles resemble bamboo, and the finials are carved bone figures. One is a man carrying a sheaf of wheat, the other is a woman with a frog on her shoulder.

The spoons are marked "HA EA FA" and "EP A". Can anybody provide identity, location, and working dates of this maker?

Atkins Brothers, Sheffield - I believe these initials were in use from the 1860s onwards, but maybe there are variations which may enable you to find a more exact date.

The figures are great - are they in fact reused Japanese netzuke? These were originally toggles, used in place of buttons. And perhaps ivory?

Thanks for the maker info, Patrick. I don't feel that the figures are netsuke--there are no holes where they would have been attached to a cord.

I considered that the set might have been a special order. The mounts are custom cut to fit each figure, and the case is cut to fit each figure's outline.

It is definitely possible that the figures are older than the silver (while the figures show minor wear, the silver and the box are in nearly pristine condition, I feel that the spoons could have been made as late as the 1920s). So, perhaps somebody asked for the figures to be mounted onto the spoons.

The figures are defintely bone and not ivory.

No holes - no netzuke

However, in passing, here is an 18th century netzuke showing the 10th century Chinese immortal Liu Hai, Japanese Gama Sennin. He comes by his toad attribute from a story about him bathing one day when a disciple named Began assumed the appearance of a toad to watch the Sage and learn.

Sometimes the toad has only three legs!
