It looks like a silent butler, which was used to hold crumbs scraped up from a table by a crumber and, later, to empty ashtrays into. There were also serving dishes of identical form, usually for the warm "savoury" course, and these are often double-walled on the bottom, forming a hot water reservoir to keep the food warm. (These are sometimes called "cheese dishes".) 20th century silverplate pieces are almost always silent butlers, which are usually no more than about 8" wide. Savoury/Cheese dishes are usually earlier (as early as the late 18th century ) and larger (10-14" wide). Hope this helps! IP: Logged |
