I received a letter about a piece from a senior lady in our area that was wondering about the origin of a piece she has and wanted to leave to her family but wanted to pass on some of the history on eth item. She did not send a picture so i really only have her description to go from. I have not been able to determine the maker from my books and thought that some one out there may be able to help... The Info is as follows...

"Here is the description of the plateau in question. It is a family piece with some age and attractive, and would like to identify its origin for my heirs.

Round with a mirror on top (Appears old and original), 12" across top, 14" across Beneath, 3 1/2" tall, with 3 legs or feet.

Design applied, grapes and leav3es etc, substantial metal in design, 2 - 2 1/2" high body.

Underside - Solid Mahogany board(appears 1 piece - reverse bevel inside) 1/2" thick secured by 3 hinges, 2" x 2 1/2", at each foot board 13 1/8" x 13 1/2"

Hallmarks on 1 hinge flap beneath. 9 cuts for access to screws There hold the two pieces together. I can find not flaw in condition."

The marks are drawn so I will describe them as follows... the first mark is a vertical rectangle cartouche containing an uppercase "S", the second is a shield cartouche where the upper half contains a crown and the lower half contains "TB&S" and the third is a diamond cartouche containing an upper case "M" these marks are from 3/16 to 1/8 inches in height.

This ended the letter.

I have searched Rainwater’s and Kovel’s as well as just about every book I have without any luck.

Any help for Mrs. Peeler and I would be grateful.

I'm having some difficulty trying to imagine this piece.
However, the marks might indicate a Sheffield origin. One possibility is Thomas Bradbury & Sons which was in production from the 19th century through to 1943 when it was bought out by the Atkin Brothers. Bradbury worked both in silver and silverplate.

Patrick,

Image a plateau, with a mirror surface about 13 inches around, standing 2 and 1/2 to 3 and 1/2 inches high on three legs.

The outside is decorated with Grape and Vine pattern...

you could place any number of things on top that would reflect the image and add height to the item on top... maybe a center piece or large vase of flowers...

Thanks, Smaug, I think I've got it now. I can also confirm Thomas Bradbury:

Ms. Jess... was elated to be able to identify the maker so there would be some history for her daughters... she told me to thank all those sweet people for making an old lady happy.....
