I have recently aquired a chafing dish set (I'm not sure what else to call it) with the marks GMCo, an anchor underneath, and the letter E and P, which my Encycloedia of American Silver Manufacturers tells me is Gorham Elmwood plate. Beneath the E and P is 0498; beneath it is the mark of a sailor's rope - like a type of hitch knot. The item has a stand with wonderfully detailed feet like lion's paws (what is the term for this feature?) and at the base, a place for canned heat to drop in. Above it is a chafing dish, into which another chafing dish sits. A lid can cover both dishes. Each dish has handles that appear to be made of bone. I would be interested in finding out anything I could about this piece, but especially the year of manufacture. IP: Logged |

Generally, silverplated holloware can not be dated with any great precision. The piece you have sounds like a chafing dish. These seem to have begun production in the 1890's and are still made. The lion paw foot is a wonderful feature. Sorry, but I am not aware on any particular name for this feature. They are nice though. The presence of separate pans indicates that your item was also used for double boiling. Chocolate could be melted over boiling water, and then kept in a liquid state this way. Really great for dipping strawberries and other fruit. Pieces like yours were available from the 1890's down to the present. One feature of silverplate manufacture is continuity: if something proved popular, it will be brought out over and over again. Which makes dating very difficult. IP: Logged |
