Could anyone explain to me what the difference between silverplate and electroplate is? I have some Mappin&Webb piece with Princes Plate mark on it and the one with EPNS mark on it. Can you date them? Thanks! IP: Logged |

Essentially silverplate and electroplate are the same thing. The former refers to the metal, the second to the technique which became viable in the 1840s (although old Sheffield Plate is different). I guess your Mappin & Webb pieces are from different dates, the company has been making silverplate (as well as silver) from the mid 19th century and is still going strong. IP: Logged |

Stephen Helliwell in his "Understanding Antique Silverplate" dates the Mappin & Webb Prince's Plate mark to the last quarter of the 19th century and describes it as one of the trade names used to describe better quality wares with a thicker coating of silver. IP: Logged |

Thank you for your help. I know Mappin & Webb is using the name 'Mappin Plate' for the modern pieces. I wonder whether EPNS pieces date pre-Prince's Plate. IP: Logged |
