Hello all, Here is an unusual item that I thought might make a good Whatzit. I do know what it is, but it isn't something you see very day. The piece is basically an hollow egg-shped vessel on four tripod legs with a ring handle at the top. It measures 5 1/2 inches long by 3 1/2 wide by 4 1/2 tall. At one end is a shaped opening, and on the inside there is a crossbar. It is silverplate, probably Victorian. Any guesses as to its purpose? If you know what it is immediately, please let others have a guess first. On the other hand, while I do know what this is, the marks are a mystery to me. There is an [RB] mark, some sort of symbol in a shield, and turned at 90 degrees another larger shield containing a rooster. Does anyone recognize these marks? Have fun! Brent IP: Logged |

How about a spoon warmer/holder. Not familiar with the marks as yet. Jersey IP: Logged |

I would agree it is a spoon warmer. The mark is one that seems to be a tad elusive. These were reproduced in the 70's and early 80's based on older models. The line never was marketed in any very systematic fashion. My understanding was that these were made in India, were electoplated and that the undermetal was silver solder. The mark appears to be based on some old Sheffield one. There were one or two others made: a rather crude nautilus and one with a hinged opening. The maker had better luck with teasets and candlelabra. These continue to be made. Many have rather good engraving and can be found with nice detailing. There is some game being played by the maker and marketers. No country of origin is given which seems a tad underhanded. It may be that some final finishing work is done in the US allowing the fiction of imported unfinished product. IP: Logged |
