I am a novice in recognizing silver/silverplate items. I am beginning to familiarize myself w/the many makers marks and symbols to identify items. I am presently beginning to collect silver/silverplate items and I've come across an identification mark that I'm just not able to identify. I've searched through the previous messages to determine whether this mark has been listed prior and didn't come up with anything. Can anyone identify this mark? My thanks for any comments/information that can be provided.

A mark alone is rarely enough to identify a piece of silverplate. Marks can refer to many things: maker, seller, jobber, wholesaler, designer, coordinated line and so forth. To give a reasonable answer we need to see the mark, the item and know its size and general outline. What does this mark appear on? IP: Logged |

Dale- The mark appears on the bottom of a teapot. It also appears on the bottoms of the Cr/Sugar as well. It is a highly decorated set w/wooden handles. I know I've seen the animal mark somewhere, just can't recall where. Thanks. IP: Logged |

Hi Marli- There are lots of animal marks around. Which is why this area of silver can quickly become very confusing. My take would be that this is better quality department store silver from the period 1920 to 1960. The wood handles seem usually to indicate a Colonial Revival or 18th century type of style. This could be a variation on a maker's mark that indicates a particular retailer. Very nice set, could you post a picture of it. IP: Logged |
