I've recently purchased a Silverplate Tea/Coffee Set and I've been experiencing difficulty in identifying the hallmark. Anyone recognize this one? (hard to take a pic of something that reflects!)

The marks are- In Olde English Script, 'S-H-S-P and there's an emblem of a lion facing left just above the letters. Below the letters reads 'Silver on Copper'. THANKS!

I know it's been suggested that displaying the set in it's entirety is helpful, so here's a pic of the set (again, hard to capture w/the reflection, the table runner is deep red). The set is in fine condition, no dents/dings or loss of silverplate - it was *very* tarnished as though it had never been cleaned.

Can anyone identify the markings based on my written description? Olde English Script- 'S, H, S, P' - Just above, Lion facing left, just below, 'Copper on Silver'.

Thanks to anyone that can help!

Marks such as those you describe tend to be associated with better department store silver.

The photo shows a set of the type popular from the mid 1930's into the present. These to my mind are not so much marks as brand names. And my experience has been that the makers of these sets used a very wide range of markings.

The same items show up with all sorts of different marks. Each mark tends to be connected with a selling venue, not a maker.

I hope this helps clarify the situation.

This is something that needs some serious study. Please also check out the general notes for this category.
