Hello folks: This ladle was given to me by my father 1 week ago which I had no idea that he had this. It was given to him some time ago as a payment for a small welding job he seems to think $5.00 plus this ladle. We are not sure if this is silver plate or silver but it is very heavy and weights 3/4 pd. If anyone might know the maker and if it silver or plate? I will try and put up some pictures if I can. The 2 marks are (inside the bowl: Thank you for the help on this one IP: Logged |

Nice piece, although I don't know the maker. I'm pretty sure it is French silverplate. "Metal blanc" was a white base metal used in the latter 19th century, and I guess 3 may refer to the thickness of the silver plating. IP: Logged |

Thanks Patrick for the info Would I be in the right forum for this piece? Also when you say latter 19th century that means 1890'S or so? Thanks again for your help always enjoy stopping here, there is a wealth of knowledge here. IP: Logged |

This looks very much like an aesthetic movement design. Which would place it in the period 1870 to 1895; more or less. A very nice ladle. How big is it? IP: Logged |

The ladle is 13" long with the bowl at 3.5"wide. Really impressive and heavy, also has great details to it. IP: Logged |

Does anyone know what these ladles were typically used for? Last year I gave a similar one to a friend. I couldn't identify the marks at the time, but it had the most incredibly beautiful, finely cast details on the handle--delicate, Grecian-style ornament. Now I believe it to be French silverplate. Can anyone recommend a reference book for French silverplate--I was impressed by the quality of the piece (as I am by the one posted here) and I'd like to know more. IP: Logged |

This is a soup ladle by a well-known maker, Armand Frenais. I don't believe that the company is still in business. Most French makers today and in the past produced both silver and silverplate items. I don't know of a book specifically about French silverplate makers. IP: Logged |

Thanks kayvee We always wondered about this piece and the name; so now we know. So from my reading in previous posts that this is silver plate but might have some silver and being of a white base metal. Its pretty amazing that such an old piece has survived all these years. Thanks IP: Logged |
