[21-0740] I have a big serving plate that has the following on the bottom, "X" with a crown,(identified as Exeter pre 1701, Has the erased lions head (I believe for Britannia) and a makers mark of HS in a sort of shield shape, also says Silver Plate. Any info would great, especially the makers mark of HS. Thanks IP: Logged |

If it says Silver Plate, then pre 1701 Exeter is out of the question. The marks sound more like those of the Hartford Sterling Company of Philadelphia. We'd need pictures of the mark to say anything more concrete. IP: Logged |

I checked hallmarks for Hartford and they are very different. The first symbol is this exactly and it says Exeter pre 1700, Several sites I have found says this "Britannia Silver:[list]is at least 95.84% silver. In 1700, the Britannia standard for plate silver was introduced, in place of the sterling standard, to discourage the melting down of coins to make plate silver. This raised the purity of silver plate from 92.5% to 95.8%." [/list IP: Logged |

Anyone may use a mark that imitates that used in Exeter before 1700; in this case I suspect they are doing just that, perhaps to brand a line of historic reproductions or the like. The term "Silver Plate" assures it's relative moderity. As said, images of the mark and piece would be of great help. IP: Logged |

wev is of course correct - the electroplating process had yet to be invented. In addition, the Exeter assay office was not established until 1701, and the old town mark of the crowned X was never used after that date. Exeter smithe before that date used variations of the old town mark, but the lions head erased was never used prior to 1701, and never in combination witht the crowned X, so without even seeing the marks it can safely be said they are not "real" hallmarks, but only the trademark of a silver plater of the late 19th or 20th Century.
