Hi! A few years ago I kind of started buying some silver plate pieces. I just love the patterns & the detail paid to them. Does anyone know a couple of good sites to go to which discusses the histories of these companies? Thanks to anyone who can help! Brandy P. IP: Logged |

You could go to Google and insert the makers' name(s). Good luck ! quote: IP: Logged |

You might look for a copy of Dorothy Rainwater's Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers in a library or bookstore. IP: Logged |

You might also go out to shows, flea markets etc. Try to locate dealers with lots of silver and talk to them. Sometimes that is the best way to learn. Having someone actually walk you through the system beats just about anything else. IP: Logged |

History rather depends on the historian. There is a wealth of information on marks etc, on pieces and what they were used for. However, to my limited knowledge, there has been much less study of the silverplate industry as a whole. What were the economics of the industry? What strategies were employed by rival companies to market their wares? How many people were employed? How were they trained? How and why were new designs etc selected? The only relatively detailed company history I know of on the internet deals with Oneida and is FIRST HUNDRED YEARS 1848-1948" by WALTER D. EDMONDS Syracuse University also has additional on-line resources about the religious beliefs of the early <gone from the Internet> Oneida Community - libwww.syr.edu/digital/guides/o/OneidaCommunityCollection/ IP: Logged |

thanks, everyone for all your help. My mother was an antique dealer for years, but she mostly dealt in depression glass, furniture, and dolls. I've done search after search in Google and haven't had much luck. I'll have to agree, there isn't much documentation on silverplating and the early companies' histories at all. Still, I like the pieces I have.....I'll check into the links you posted, Patrick. Again, thank all of you for your suggestions and help! Brandy P IP: Logged |
