Some time ago we found a fun piece that I call a grape stand. A grape leaf design is embossed into the base. Arms extend from a center shaft that gives the impression of being a grape vine and the arms have hooks to hold grapes. The mark T.W & S with a pelican is, I believe, the mark of T. Wilkinson and Sons of Birmingham. It also has a Registration number 146414 stamped on the bottom. The hooks at the end of the arms come out and the arms rotate around the base. I have always been amazed that all the pieces have stayed together. Does anyone know if there is there a web site for English registration numbers? I think this was most likely made in the last quarter of the nineteenth century and the registration number should tell one when the starting date was for these items. Also was T. Wilkinson & Sons a predecessor to the Wilkinson blade company?
My wife recently found the glass stand and in some respects it is the same idea expressed in glass and is for sweets instead of grapes. We put rock candy in it at Christmas time. The glass is not marked and we have no idea how old it is, although it has a stylized center shaft that reminds me of the 1920's. Each basket comes off and again it is amazing that it is all together. On the other hand it may be a modern reproduction or creation and not that old.
Any information about either item would be appreciated. IP: Logged |

Registered design 146414 should date to March 1890. A useful site devoted to these numbers on glass is British Registered Design numbers (1842 to 1944) But the numerical sequence holds true for other materials such as silver and silverplate. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the site address. That is a very interesting and informative site. Also I am sorry about the size of the one picture. I am trying to figure out why one is so big and the others are the correct size. IP: Logged |

The glass and metal piece is truly wonderful. It looks very much like something from an upscale confectionary shope. It would have been used to display candies. Such pieces also existed in other fields of retail. Imagine it in a window filled with jelly beans. A great item in wonderful shape. IP: Logged |
