I bought this sugar sifter in London. The marks are "WB & Co.," letter "S", and "EP", which I know indicates "electroplated." Any idea as to when, where, and by whom it was made? Thanks and happy New Year,

I have seen a number of these pieces and have the impression that the age varies enormously. Which leads me to conclude this is something that is periodically made down into the present. It is a lovely type of design, one which works for a large number of time periods. Beyond that, I really don't know. It could be 150 years old or made last year. IP: Logged |

Well, I bought it at a London flea market in 1987. I doubt anyone sifts sugar anymore, so I don't think it is contemporary. Also, the shape of the date letter crest and the letter itself were used for Sheffield in 1910-11, so that seems like a good guess. Any ideas about the company that made it? Thanks, IP: Logged |

Ahhhh, people who are into baking sift powdered and flavored sugars onto fresh made pastries all the time. And, with a little work on grating, cheeses can be used in a sifter. Sugar sifters are wonderfully useful items. IP: Logged |

True enough, but baking sifters are cup like contraptions not spoons. But if we keep going like this, we'll soon have a baking forum. Seriously though, thanks for the help. Does my 1910-11 guess make sense? IP: Logged |

I can't place the mark exactly, but it is definitely English silverplate. I don't think the "Date Letter" has much to do with anything. The style is basically Victorian, and could date from around 1860 to 1915 or so. I doubt it would be much newer than that. Brent IP: Logged |
